Online Gujarati and Culture Class

About

Gujarati came into existence in the 19th century and it was primarily used for business transactional purposes. Gujarati is the official language of the state of Gujarat, North West of India but is also spoken in Rajhastan and Mumbai and some parts of Pakistan. There are around 66 million speakers spread across the globe.

Our teachers are highly qualified and experienced native speakers. They use their extensive knowledge of the language, literature and culture to inspire and encourage students to progress in their learning and develop a high level of competence in the language.

Our Approach

We take the approach of fun learning from a young age so that children learn to love the language. The pathway and the learning that your child would do each year has been defined below.

  • Bal-Mandir classes comprise students from ages 5 - 7 years. Within this class, they learn many words in Gujarati and the introduction of the alphabet is also done. Click here for more information on BalMandir
  • Year 1 – After the firming of the foundation from Bal-Mandir the students learn to read small words and texts. Alphabets and further vocabulary are introduced. Click here for more information on Year 1
  • Year 2 – Vowels are taught within this year and further reading practices using words with vowels. Speaking topics with basic grammar are also introduced in GujEng alphabet. Click here for more information on Year 2
  • Year 3 – Half letters are the key focus of this year. Speaking topics and grammar in the Gujarati alphabet are introduced. Click here for more information on Year 3
  • Year 4 – Focus on further speaking topics and Gujarati Grammar is introduced. Click here for more information on Year 4
  • Year 5 – Work of GCSE standard is taught. Click here for more information on Year 5
  • Year 6 - Work of GCSE standard is taught. Click here for more information on Year 6.

At all stages, pupils work at a level which meets their needs. Pupils are in mixed-ability classes with a class teacher. On occasions support staff work with individual children or groups of children to enhance their learning.

*The above is an indication of content that may be covered over the duration of the course but it could vary depending on the level and progress of students in the class.

Teacher assessments are made on the children’s progress in all subjects throughout the year. Parents are given the targets and asked to help their child achieve their targets/ regular homework is set and, again, parents are asked to help their child complete it.

The teaching hours are 1hr 45min per week excluding Assembly and break times.

Parental Support
  • Maintain a relationship with the teachers by engaging with them before or after the classes.
  • Parents/guardians are required to sign the homework log and ensure the completion of the homework.
  • To attend parents' meetings (held in July)
  • Support us by speaking the Gujarati language at home or ensuring that other relatives are speaking to the children.
